Potting mix?
Potting soils are generally a combination of peat moss, perlite and vermiculite. Depending on the plant being started sand is sometimes added, some mixtures contain a slow release fertilizer. Some garden centers carry comercial potting mixes in large bales at a reasonable cost- you migth want to start with one of those and if you feel the need tweak it with some compost or whatever else you feel your specific plants need,
Reply:Potting mix is generally mixing dirt with about 20% fertilizer and if you have sandy soil, add something to hold the moisture. If you have clay soil, you don't need it.

Reply:I'm not lazy but I prefer to buy mypotting mix from professional greenhouses or businesses. That way there are no "germs" in the soil. Two bushel bags are not expensive and it is the same mix they use so I know it is right for my climate and needs.
Reply:Secret recipe potting mixes are fun, but a lot of work. I like Miracle Gro mix. I add peat or sphagnum moss and vermiculite to increase the yield. Proportions? Gee, I never measured....something like 2 parts potting mix, 1 part moss, 1 part vermiculite.

Ain't dirt grand?
Reply:use a coarse, well draining potting soil, such as cactus mix or potting mix with perlite and sand.
